For those of you who have been haunting the K-Marts, looking for the
Flambeau Infinite Divider trays to store your Realist format slides, and
found (as I have) that K-Mart seems to have abandoned Flambeau products in
favor of new supplier Plano, I may have some good news: the Plano Stowaway
3700 (found in the fishing tackle section of your local K-Mart). This tray is
the same size as the Flambeau (approx 13-1/2" x 8") and divided into four
long compartments running the width of the unit. The unit is all plastic,
with three hinges at the back and two molded "snap-closed" fasteners in the
front. Though I doubt if the thing is water-tight, it certainly is very
water-resistant.
Unlike the Flambeau, however, the divider walls have 5 molded "divider
holders" along each wall, plus plastic dividers to slip into them. I find
that if one uses dividers in the second and fourth positions, it forms
compartments (12 in all) that are each roughly the width of the Realist pair,
with about 1/4" room on either side of the slide, and somewhat more between
the top of the slide and the roof of the container. Those who don't want so
much "play" between their slides and the walls of the compartment can
probably insert styrofoam chunks to hold the slides better in place.
So while this is not as good as the Flambeau, which I would prefer, I
find the Plano acceptable -- but truth is, I bought them after trying to deal
with the Flambeau people on the phone and getting the impression that the
company is not too efficient or coordinated. I did find out, however, that
they don't market to individuals, but the person who apparently knows where
to buy the Flambeau products (retail outlets), one Barbara Picard, never
seems to be at her desk -- I keep getting an answering machine. However, if
you want to try, her number is (800) 232-3474. Please post her answer(s) if
you get any, as will I, if I get any.
