RE: Eric responds to my comments saying +N and -N aren't always used.
I don't want to debate the zone system, but will make two or three
comments based on 60 years fooling with this stuff.
   !. Zone system et al exist because a teacher has to "teach something"

   2. If the brightness of the scene doesn't fit the film latitude, you
have to compensate the development. The movie and TV people solve the
problem by controlling the lighting with fills or reflectors or skims
(shade netting) to within the range of the film or sensor.
   3. Regardless of how many things you meaaure or calculate, you can
only set one f/stop and shutter speed (or movie shutter sector).
  When Adams was exhibiting in salons and doing commercial work I don't
think he did any of this, but teaching forced him to devise a practical
(?) method of filed sensitometry. BobH
