Yes, BobH, the Canon 50 mm lenses do have distortion but it seems 
to match.  The way I measured the lenses to pick out a pair was to 
just measure the extreme diagonal of the grid.  I set up the grid 
on a wall, set up the camera on a triopod, and just put on a lens, 
shot, put on a lens, shot, ad infinitum, ad nauseum until I'd gone 
through all of them.  I have no idea if all SLRs' lenses are this 
consistent but these Canon lenses sure were.  So we have one data 
point.
