Squeezing An Extra Shot

Dr. T says: "LeRoy Barco has noticed that he can sneak in an extra picture in
a roll (20th in 24 exp., also could be 30th in 36 exp.) and he says:
>I have space, almost always, for a twentieth exposure but don't take
>the chance.
What chance don't you take???? It is either waste the film or sneak
one more picture... If the picture is important then retake it in the
next roll, or, just to be absolutely sure, the first and second picture
in a new roll."
George! I am not sneaky! Unless I can get away with it! :=)
The operative phrase in my thinking is "almost always." And since every
picture I take is important, sometimes unretaketable, the chance I don't take
is that of losing an important, unretakeable image. Taking an additional
exposure is wasting an exposure if you are only going to use one. Of course,
paying for insurance is a waste too... :=)
I understand the sound and feel of the Realist film advance, George, and
my photofinisher is quite good on the end of the film. But if I begin
expecting that the new technician won't cut a little wide one day and that I
won't slightly confuse the loading and start down the roll a little far one
day, the Rule of Cousin Murphy will lose me the "important" shot I thought I
had.
All that said, since I'm going to get more heavily into "real shows,"
scripted, themed, shot-to-order, etc., I'll start using that "extra" image so
as to have a greater range for editing, transitions, panoram borders, and for
sharing with friend and relatives.
