Sam,
Go to any decent sized library and they should have a book on Copyright, 
Trademark and Patent Law.  There are some good ones out there for people who 
aren't lawyers (like me!) which will get you started.  I do know that the one 
thing any lawyer will recommend you do if you have an idea that could lead to 
patents is the following:

Put all your ideas on paper with diagrams, etc. or whatever is needed to show 
the idea and then put it in an envelope and mail it to yourself (normal mail or 
registered etc.-whatever you prefer). DO NOT OPEN IT when it arrives and save it
to show date proof of your idea.
