Realist red button lenses & Kodaslide II

When I wrote: >Another problem is a "haze" between the lenses... I meant to
say haze between the elements of one lens. This might be due to a
deterioration of the cement but I am not convinced that this is always the
cause.
It's interesting how len's problems usually hit *both* lenses of the same
viewer (that has been my observation). Is it because both lenses came from
the same (defective-prone) stock or does it have something to do with the
way the viewer was stored? I tend to think it is a "stock" problem.
>Your chances of hitting a "crystal clear" viewer are better in older and
>newer viewers... That's right. Lenses of very old or very new viewers
are usually better. You can tell the very old viewers from the black
focusing knob (this is very old) and the painted compartment. You can tell
the much later viewers from the black switch button or a few more features.
There must have been some changes in the lens supplier or lens' cementing
practices. Ron Zakowski is not aware of any such change.
Now, we are talking about very small changes... Changes not seen by an
untrained eye and, in most cases, can only be seen by comparing viewers
side to side by someone who is strickler for perfection, like Allan Carrano
;) (that's a compliment Allan!) Those who cannot tell the difference
between single element or double element lenses or are satisfied with the
$3 viewers, have nothing (I mean absolutely nothing!) to fear.
Enough said about the Realist red button. For those who think that the
Kodaslide II is a much better viewer, I have news for you... I can see
chromatic aberration in this viewer. All the viewers that I have examined.
It is not a matter of one or two. The lenses do not correct for chromatic
aberration as well as the lenses in the Realist and other decent viewers.
Is this a problem? For me it is a major problem. I had a Kodaslide II
viewer and sold it because I could not stand the chromatic aberration. But
that's just me... Others do not seem to be bothered at all...
Life is tough if you are only looking for the best... -- George
