In order to get a passing grade in my book selection class in library 
school, each student was required to go to the front of the class, 
select a book from a pile of perfectly bound, hard-cover books, some 
new, some old, and then methodically tear off the cover, rip out the 
pages by the roots, split the spine, pull out wads of pages and tear 
them fore-edge to back and top to bottom, and then strew the remains 
into a trash bin.  Some of the students almost wept to do it.  
Imagine doing that to a copy of Ferwerda, or to an Ike-issue Life 
magazine.  It makes you re-examine your values.
