digital cameras
There was a discussion a month or two ago on the merits of digital
cameras (i.e. as a source of images for 3D photography). While looking
for something else, I accidentally came across a web page describing
some products and current trends (in the author's opinion):

I'm not sure I agree with the statements on compression. Very good compression
with factors of 20-100 is available, but *lossless* compression of more than
2x may be impractical in the general case. Since lossy compression results
in artifacts upon restoration of the image, for 3D images it is important
that these artifacts not cause troublesome disparity between the left and
right images.
There are ways to compress 3D images, but in order to use these it may be
necessary to get at the "raw data", before compression by the camera
electronics.
(I suppose some of these 3D images on web pages are compressed, and I haven't
noticed problems with this compression - preserving "35mm-like" image
quality may be another matter.)
