Get your operator to mask the extra portion of the frame with a bit
of black electrical tape.
It will take a bit of playing around until he/she has the position correct.
As the tape will not be at the film plane, the mask will be a bit out of
focus and the operator will have to ensure that it doesn't crop one side of
the frame with a fuzzy edge.
This tape mask overcomes the problems mentioned above of adjacent
negatives throwing the exposure off as now all the readings are from one
frame. When my operator added the tape mask he got perfect matches on the
left and right prints on the first roll he tried. Before the mask there was
no consistency.
Be sure to give your operator lots of compliments after going to the
trouble of printing Realist negs. It is a joy to get a roll back with all
the shots perfectly printed and matched.
