The simple solution, as you suggest, is for a separate category for
computer-generated images. This subject came up for discussion this year in the
Stereo Club of Southern California (SCSC) when one of our computer-oriented
people entered an incredible 3D conversion of a flat painting, but the
controversy was less about the use of a computer than the fact that the original
image was not created by the entrant. (I pointed out that all those folks
entering pictures of Half Dome didn't pile the rocks up themselves either, but
it didn't fly.) The consensus on the board was that it was no big deal since we
only have about four members who enter computer-generated stuff anyway, but that
a new category might be in order if / when the number of entries grows.
