George, George, Derek and various folks have posted regarding computer
manipulation in competition...
A quick observation...
The ability to manipulate images with computer software is certainly a
talent in it's own right, but does not necessarily reflect one's skill
as a photographer. I work with any number of people who are fantastic
photoshop practicioners and who do excellent composition/design work
using photographic images, but these folks are hardly photographers.
They could not take or art direct a proper shoot with a gun at their
heads.
Likewise, there are many talented photographers out there who need to
rely on the skills of the software people to get there photos enhanced
or manipulated to where they need to be.
Are there people who can do both? Sure. Can they do both equally well?
Not that I've come across.
My point is that they are seperate skills, and so competitions which
include them are complicating the judging process by having to deal with
the two seperate skill sets.
Which leads to the questions... what are you really judging in your
competitions which include these images?
That being said...
With the caviat that stereo imaging is a highly resolution dependent
medium... How are folks dealing with inputing and outputing? What
resolutions are we discussing here? To my knowledge, most scanners are
prepress devices and are thus geared to 2700ish dpi, which is
substantially less than the resolution of the original chromes. Also, to
my knowledge it takes a highly specialized setup, such as a film process
camera, to get these computer images back onto film with anything
approaching even that reduced resolution...
