George, I wish to respond to:

About variety in subject matter, have you ever considered the Batch 
Theory? I have a batch which came out good, based on ONE field trip, or 
ONE subject. So I will compete, ad infinitum, eventually with all the 
pictures I took in that batch. Each time I go to select a new slide for 
competition, another picture from that same batch is better than all the 
other pictures I have taken. Besides, tonight we have a different judge.
