computer imaging
I'm a very lucky individual, At work I regularly use a Polaroid
Digital Palette CI 5000s slide printer. At 4000 line of
resolution it produces excellent slides. I shoot standard 100
asa slide film and process it at our local custom lab. Usually
I'm working with charts, graphs and presentations for our
doctors, but I have had the opportunity to try some experimental
3D work (see Expo2) with the ends of rolls.
While computer generated images may or may not be output to
film, the computer photographer has many of the same choices
(and hundreds if not thousands more) as a traditional
photographer. The elements of composition, style etc. are the
same. Working with reasonable 3D software I must choose my
"lenses" (virtual 35 to 135), lighting, resolution, lens
separation etc. as well as the compositional elements. A bad
photo and a bad tif are functionally the same - bad (sorry Cliff
;-) ), the same applies to good. Its not the medium - its the
message (McLuhan was wrong!!! [I hope I spelled his name
right]).
Digital imaging, from rendering software, photo manipulation
software or strait from a digital camera is about images, just
like photography. As 3D enthusiasts we would be shooting
ourselves in the foot if we refuse to accept (and encourage)
those who are bringing fresh creativity to 3D imaging. Just
because computer designers have usurped the term 3D and applied
it to monoscopic images, there is no reason to treat them as
outcasts. Many (such as myself and others on this list) can be
shown the "error of their ways" ;-) and be converted to the
fraternity of stereoscopic (or other forms of true 3D) image
aficionados.
