Computer Stuff? I Know!

Before you read what I have to say check out my stuff on
"WWW.3DZine.simplenet.com" (thanks Larry) so that you know the kind of work
that I do. I hope that you like it. Excuse the spelling I'm having spell
check trouble.
I Can't believe what I'm reading about computers and 3-D photography.
Everybody who is in this group uses one (a computer) to at least be in this
group. Everybody who is in this group have visited at least one web site.
(am I going out on a limb?) Ten years ago, more than likely, none of us would
have imagined that we'd be discussing stuff in this group. More than likely
in another ten years all the new cameras will be digital. There will be
disposible digital cameras for $25. There will be middle of the road digital
cameras for the vacation photographer for $50 to $75. There will be really
good digital cameras for the hobbist, like ourselves, for $200 to $500. Last
but not least there will be $2000 high end cameras for the pro. Fargo
already makes a really good photo-printer for $200. Joe Public will be
snaping filmless, downloading when he gets home, saving the ones he likes,
adjusting/manipulating and printing at home. Infact I'd venture to say, if
you are using film ten years from now you'll have to get it developed by
mailorder. If you have money invested in "One Hour Developing" stock I'd
recomend SELL!!! If you think that I'm way out of line, just visit any
camera company web site and try and find info on film processing. The bottom
line is don't fight it, embrace it. We should be discussing how to
incoprorate the digital domain into our hobby. Myself, I can't wait until
good digital cameras are $200 to $500. I'll be one of the first to buy two,
take the band saw to them and make myself a stereo digital setup.
The people who are of the opinion that one can push a button and get
stereo from thier computer, do not have a clue. I have yet to find a
program under $8000 that makes stereo images. Nor have I found
instructions on how to make good stereo images for the programs that I use.
I have been scoring well with the Detroit Stereographic Society's contest.
Only about 10% of the images that I make on my computer are presentable.
I'm doing real good if the judges score my images high enough to place 1 out
of 3 of the pictures that I enter. If I could just push a button and get
perfect images than I've been ripped off. Why don't I win every month???
Why don't I get perfict scores?? Could it be because I have to develop many
of my own tecniques to aquire my images. Could it be that I still have to
know how to set up a camera, lighting, etc?? Could it be that my computer
images are subject to over/under exposure?? I know a lot, a whole lot more
people who have the same software that I use and haven't produced a single
presentable image, 2 or 3-d, than people who have. Why do I consistantly
score well? Could it be that I also have entered paintings ( oil, acrylic,
and water colors ) and sculptures in national contest and placed in those
too?? Just like the camera, chemicals, and film are media for the artist, so
is the computer and it's coming of age. What I do in my computer is no
different than the guy with the a $30,000 studio to work with. If I have no
talent than I will put out crap. Just like that guy with the $30,000 studio.
As Dr.T can confirm, some of the stuff that I present can be discribed as
crap, and thier scores reflect. From bad mounting, over and under exposed to
poor subject matter. My winners are not winners because I'm lucky or I have
a computer. They are winners because I work hard at my images. The computer
generated 3-D stuff is just like doing Table Top Stereo photography and the
computer manipulated images are no different that the special effects created
with chemistery. It's just different tools to produce the same ends. I can
and have scored at the DSS with straight stereographs right out of my
Realist. In fact the very first snap shot I took with my Realist took a
third place in the DDS's May contest. I just enjoy doing the computer stuff.
You like pictures from your vacations. I like pictures from my mind.
I can't afford a great computer system. The one I'm using is over six
years old. Also I can't afford a new stereo camera. I had to scrape for my
Realist. Please don't torch the computer, "Frankenstien Monster", for being
different. It would be stereography's loss. I really enjoy having a forum
to present my work in.
Thanks,
Frankie (Bill Battle)
