This is quite similar to the case of the Oklahoma City bombing here in the US.
The only picture the press had of the suspect at first was one just after he'd
been arrested, scowling angrily at the camera. His lawyer was obviously wise to
impressions, however, and made sure that the press was quickly given new
pictures of him looking more relaxed and like the "all-American boy next door".

Of course every photo tells a story, as has been commented on here by several of
us. The goal of a good photojournalist is to try and tell the story as it
happened without creating an unduly altered impression of events or
personalities. I think that by and large, most mainstream journalists adhere to
that goal, which is probably why so many people so dearly love the less
principled tabloid press where all bets are off and the nastier and more ugly
people can be made to appear, the better.
