   My GUESS is that the makers buy large lots of lenses, and then pick
closely matched pairs. If they bought, lets say lenses numbered 450,000 to
649,000, in cartons holding 5,000 lenses each, it would be possible to pick
two lenses, i.e. 525,072 and 525,166 long before numbers 450,000 and
450,022...etc. That could explain the FUNNY run of lens numbers. 
   On the other hand, someone in the plant would get the day's or week's
production of camera bodies, so the body serial numbers would go out in
pretty consecutive order. It seems to me that most companies made the bodies
in house, and out-sourced the lenses.
