Anaglph videos

In a previous post, I joked with Dr.T on how to make his kids eat
their food by forcing them to watch terrible 3d anaglyph movies.
There was quite some recent discussion about it recently on why
that is. Someone a while back also asked about the Rhino anaglyph
3d movies and why he couldn't see 3d. I never got around to giving
my2cents on the subject, so I am now.
As was mentioned NTSC is pretty terrible in this regard. I would
like to speculate on why this is so. There were some good reasons
given and would like to add some more. One reason I think is because
NTSC stands for Never The Same Color! And this is not my quote.
The resolution is adequate for presenting Analgphs on NTSC but color
is the major problem. The colors on the set are not the same from set
to set. Another more important factor that is detrimental to anaglpyh
videos or broadcasts not being effective is that even if the colors are
adjusted to the right ones is that the colors tend to bleed into the
adjacent ones. It so happens that red is on of the more notorious ones
which is one of the ones used in anaglyphs. This is my personal experience
from trying to watch anaglyphs on regular NTSC television sets.
A long time ago, I used to use the Commodore64 (loved that thing) and
I used it first with my 20 inch Toshiba color set. The image was pretty
good in general but when it came to viewing text in 40 columns, one of
the worst color combinations was with red text. It blended very badly
with the adjacent colors. I then got a Commodore monitor and the
problem was greatly reduced. Of course the monitor bybassed the RF
modulator which helped alot. But getting back to the present. When
I got the anaglph tapes I tried viewing them on my Sony 28 inch Trinitron
XBR. I was dissappointed and could not see any 3d. I then tried my
Commodore monitor (I use it as a regular television now with my VCR) and
the 3d effect was there but not great. At least I could see 3d which I
could not with the Sony. I did feed the signal directly to the TV from
the VCR thru the RCA cables in both cases, if anybody is wondering. So the
moral of this story is you really need a "good" set that can reproduce the
colors well and not bleed. That inexpensive Commodore monitor I now realize
was and is pretty good!
BTW this doesn't apply to computer monitors because they are vastly
superiour and anaglyphs are feasable on them and are a reality.
There are some amazing analgyph 3d pics (I don't mean mine, which I consider
average)on the net that don't give anaglyphs a bad name but rather portrays
them in a positive light, or positive color. ;-)
My favorite 2 colors are RED and BLUE, RED and BLUE, RED and BLUE (&green)
And don't forget, I don't have any more RED wine LEFT.
