This is known as "focus anxiety"! ;)
I suffer too. So here is what I do: I use a regular slide. The slide
does not have to be sharp! (but Dr. T would not know what happens if you
try to focus a projector with an out-of-focus slides... guess why... ;))
but I guess will work because you can still see the in and out of focus of
the projector lenses. The slide (this is important) must be glass-mounted
to make sure that it is held flat in place.
I use a pair of binoculars. (I told you I suffer too!) The stereo
projectors that I am familiar with, have one lens fixed (screwed all the way
in, cannot be roated in the mount) Turn the lamp for this lens ONLY! Look
at the screen with your binoculars (helps if the binoculars are focused on
the screen!!!) Use the focusing adjustment of the projector until the slide is
focused. Do not touch the focusing knob of the projector while you do this
part: Turn off this lamp and turn on the other one. This is the lens that
can be focused individually. Turn it in its mount to get the sharpest
possibly picture. Again, this is checked with the binoculars!
Now you have a very nicely focused projector.
After you went through this excercise, ask yourself why are doing all this.
Most probably your cardbord mounted slides will need to be refocused
individually since the chips are not held flat in place. Change only the
projector focusing knob. Do not try to focus the lenses individually
again!
I hope that the above will be helpful in curing "focus anxiety". Whether
they will result in sharper projected slides, I am not sure!
