new lenticulars
I'm surprised that no one has mentioned it yet but I
recently saw a new type of lenticular sports card which I
think is really an advance of the art. They are transmission
lenticulars (not reflection type) that you hold up to the
light. When rocked, they play back about 3-4 seconds of
"video". They go by the name "motion" something. The first
couple were called skymotion. (Apparently there was a second
set of lesser reflection lenticulars which were also called
skymotion so don't get confused). Now shipping to retailers is
a set of football motionvision cards. The maker is really
Kodak (kodamotion) which I think has some winning technology
here. The cards will retail for $5-6 each. This might be
a big commercial success for Kodak's Depth Imaging
group, which has showed large 3-D lenticulars at the NSA
conventions. Reportedly, they are working on adding 3-D
depth and motion to the lenticulars. One of these is called
virtual vision but I haven't seen it yet. As this technology
improves we could see some interesting things.
