Some time back, someone on this list (sorry, I forgot who) explained a
simple method for adjusting/checking focal length, which is worth being
mentioned again. All you need, besides the camera which is going to be
checked, is a piece of glass (or something else which is transparant),
and a SLR camera of which you know that it focusses correctly at
infinity.
You put some lines on the piece of glass and remove the back of the
camera which is to be adjusted or checked. The glass is fixed in the
place where usually the film is, the surface with the lines to the front
of the camera, so in the film plane.
Then you put the two cameras face to face on a table, such that you can
look through (the viewfinder of) the SLR and, from the front, through
the lens of the camera to be checked. When the SLR is focussed to
infinity, you will see a sharp image of the lines only when the other
camera is also focussed exactly to infinity. So you set the other
camera to infinity as well, and adjust the lens untill you see a sharp
image of the lines.
I have applied this simple method for checking/adjusting infinity focus
to several cameras. Easy and accurate.
