Diaphragm rings Realist

Turning the diaphragm setting rings of my Realist (3.5) (A2003, so an 
early one) goes rather heavy. I think cleaning is the only way to solve 
this problem. As far as I can judge that is not a simple job. I looked 
in Ed Romney's repair guide for this subject but could not find it.
Perhaps someone knows a simple method?
