With the Pentax splitter, it's f/5.6 or f/8  "only" as the recommended
range.  One can use anything as needed, but one is trading off, uh,
side effects (like the stripe which usually is not visible in the viewer)
so it isn't recommended to wander too much with the f/stop.

With my Pentax splitter on my Pentax (SF-1) camera, auto-exposure worked
just fine.  Autofocus didn't, but then my "normal" lens isn't an autofocus
lens (only autofocus lens I have for that camera is a slightly wide to slightly
telephoto Pentax zoom lens).
