Exactly. It is (or at least was) grossly cheap for them to purchase at
several steps along the chain. When they got started, they were
purchasing the tail ends of motion picture stock from the major studios
(as no A/C or cameraman would be caught dead running out of film in the
middle of a take!). Don't know if they still do, but bulk buys of motion
picture film can be readily negotiated.

Ditto positive film stock. Film labs make mega purchases of stocks
specifically designed for work prints, etc, and cause of greater volumes
these materials are available at lower costs.

None of this is to imply that Eastman or Fuji motion picture stocks are
a good choice for still work, for all the reasons mentioned by Derek and
others...
