Stereo Clubs (Long)

George Themelis writes:

"IMO, stereo clubs is a great concept, a great place to develop and
promote stereo photography. Every major city should have one!
Perhaps if this presentation goes well you will consider starting
a 3d club in Rochester. I was under the impression that there was
such a club meeting informally at Kodak."

I fully agree with you George that stereo clubs are a great concept but
there are probably very few people on this list that need to be convinced
of that. The challenge, as you are aware, is to convince the "outsiders".
The Cascade Stereoscopic Club in Portland was formed 3 years ago. We have
about 60 people on the mailing list and an average of about 25 for our
monthly meetings. In an effort to recruit more people, we have developed a
questionnaire which will go to our members next month. I am including a
draft of it here and would be happy to get reactions to the questions and
comments on what we have missed. George, you as member of our Club, will
receive the final formatted version in the mail.

One of the challenges facing a new club is a good meeting place. We use to
meet in a suburban community center for almost three years, and finally
negotiated with our local well known science center, OMSI, to be our
permanent host. You may try this approach as well in Cleveland. Two
institutions come to mind: Great Lakes Science Center, a relatively new
museum and The Health Museum, an older institution. In Rochester, try the
Rochester Museum and Science Center. Present to them a plan and convince
them that your club will increase their attendance. And it should! Work out
some joint projects for the future, such as an annual event that will
promote the club and the museum. as well. It may just work. That's what we
did in Portland, and we have some exciting plans for the upcoming annual
2-3 day event in the summer, including exhibits, demonstrations, and
screenings.

Here is the draft of the questionnaire in an unformatted version:

                      CASCADE STEREOSCOPIC CLUB SURVEY

We are now 3 years old and it is time to update our files. We would
appreciate it if you would take a few minutes to answer the questions below
and mail this back to us in the prepaid envelope. Doing so would allow us
to communicate faster with our members and improve the overall direction
and service of our club. If you are not a member but would like to become
one, see below for details.

The Cascade Stereoscopic Club was formed in January of 1994. The present
list has some 60 names and we have been averaging about 20-25 members in
recent meetings. One of the reasons for conducting this survey is to
improve membership attendance at regular meetings. Another reason is to
learn more about you and share this information with the Club. It also
provides feedback to help us determine what direction our Club should take.
Of course, it is up to you to decide which of the questions you feel
comfortable answering. We will not publish anything about you that you
don't want us to publish.
