CLAY'S CLINIC: PART FOUR Colin Clay
In this Clinic I would like to present some information an the
cooling of stereo projectors. Because of the wide differences in design
and the number of possible alternative arrangements, it is not practical
to give full derails for all situations. As an alternative, I will
therefore give some general information and guiding principles which I
have found by personal experience to be beneficial. This article
will mainly, therefore, be of interest to those building a stereo
projector from scratch or modifying older stereo projectors to take
quartz-halogen lamps.
COOLING FANS
There arc two main types of impeller cooling fans, classified as
centrifugal or axial flow, corresponding to the direction of air flow
through the impeller. A further type is the cross-flow as used in warm
air heaters, bur these have not been used in projectors to the best of my
knowledge. Centrifugal fan impellers are of two main types, having either
forward or backward curved blades as important to ensure that the
impeller rotates in the appropriate direction as shown in the diagrams.

In general, centrifugal fans tend to be more efficient than the
axial variety for given impeller diameters and speeds. Also they can form
a reasonable light trap provided the baseplate of the impeller is solid
and this can be a useful advantage in certain locations in the projector.
FAN PRESSURE/FLOW CHARACTERISTICS
Fans have a falling air pressure characteristic with increasing air
flow rates. The general laws relating to fan speed are as follows:-
(a) Air flow rate varies directly as the fan speed.
(b) Air pressure varies as the square of the fan speed.
(c) Power requirements vary as the cube of the fan speed.
To give some ideas of practical fan characteristics I have carried
our tests on centrifugal fans from Hawk projectors. A fan motor with
impeller was mounted in a closed box with a round air entry hole below
the impeller as in the Hawk projector. An outlet duct was connected to
the box with a straight section incorporating the propeller of an
anemometer. The end of the duct could be progressively closed by a flat
plate to provide the necessary variable resistance to the air flow.
Air flow rate was measured with an electronic anemometer and air
pressure determined with an electronic manometer connected with a wall
tap in the side of the test box.
The fan speed was measured with an electronic optical tachometer
triggered by the light reflected from a small piece of glass bead
material attached to the fan impeller.
Tests were carried out on two different Hawk impellers, one with four
flat blades as fitted to the early models and the other with eight flat
blades, nominally curved backwards. To give more information, three
different Hawk motors were used to give a range of fan speeds;-
(a) A 240 volt motor, average speed about 1900 rpm.
(b) A different 240 volt motor, average speed about 2400 rpm.
(c) A 120 volt motor, average speed about 2600 rpm.
The results obtained from the six different combinations are shown in
Fig. 2 below.

It can be seen that there is a significant difference between the
four-bladed fan run at medium speed and the eight-bladed fan running at
higher speeds. The actual operating point in a working projector depends
an the resistance of the air path through the projector. The operating
air pressures on the small front compartment and in the main part of a
Hawk Mk. V projector were measured, and the values obtained used to plot
the two systems resistance lines on the graph, assuming the usual square
law characteristic i.e. four times the pressure at double the flow rate.
The operating point of the fan is where the particular fan
characteristic line crosses the system resistance line.
For example: considering the front compartment, the air flow rate
using the four blade/motor A combination would be 10.8 litres per second
(l/s). Converting to the eight-blade/motor C set-up would improve the air
flow rate to 17.5 l/s, an increase of over 60%. This would produce
significant improvement in slide cooling, at the expense of course of an
increase in the noise level.
GENERAL COMMENTS ON FANS AND COOLING
1. Larger diameter impellers give greater air flow, other
parameters being equal.
2. Fan inlet grilles should have as large a 'free area' as
possible, otherwise there can be a significant reduction in air flow.
3. If the air inlet is in the bottom of the projector (as in the
Hawk) the feet should be reasonably long to avoid restricting the air
flow.
4. Major improvements in the air resistance characteristics of the
projector are necessary if worthwhile increases in air flow are to be
obtained.
5. Air velocity can be speeded up relatively efficiently, but
significant losses occur when air velocity decreases due to an increase
in the cross-sectional area.
6. Generally speaking it is preferable to direct air to where it
is most needed (condensers, heat filters and slide) and to restrict air
flow to other cooler areas by suitable baffling etc.
7. It is better to have a direct air flow path from free air space
through the fan and over the hot W CHARACTERISTICS

quartz-halogen lamps as they arc designed to operate at high temperatures
in order to maintain the tungsten-halogen operating cycle.
FAN NOISE
Fans can be rather noisy in operation and this can be disturbing,
particularly in the domestic situation. Some general thoughts on this
subject are:-
(a) A larger fan impeller operating at a slow speed produces
plate to provide the necessary variable resistance to the air flow.
Air flow rate was measured with an electronic anemometer and air
pressure determined with an electronic manometer connected with a wall
tap in the side of the test box.
The fan speed was measured with an electronic optical tachometer
trerable to select a large slow-speed
type. Catalogues often give noise figures in decibels (dB), the lower the
figure the better.
SOURCES OF SUPPLY OF FANS
Fans can often be obtained from the suppliers of electrical and
mechanical components, such as Service Trading Co. at the address given
in 'Clay's Clinic No. 1.' New axial flow fans may be purchased from
Radiospares Limited and a number of other similar suppliers of electronic
components.
HEAT FILTERS
Heat filters are essential components of a high-powered projector
in order to limit the temperature rise of the slide. One popular type was
Chance ON20, which has been superseded by type HA3, and currently
available is the KG series from Schott. By careful control of their
optical characteristics they can transmit some 80% of the visible light
but only 6% of the heat, based on a filter thickness of 4mm. Obviously,
in absorbing over 90% of the heat in the light beam, they get very hot
and need careful cooling. Some points to be borne in mind are:-
1. The hot beam of heat/light should cover most of the area of the
filter to promote even heating. The conventional location is between the
aspheric and bi-convex condensers, where the beam is of maximum diameter.
2. Uneven jets of cold air blowing on to the filters should be
avoided.
3. The filters should be protected from moisture due to their rather
unstable surfaces.
Condensation can be a problem if the projector becomes cold in
transit and is then taken in to a warm, humid environment.
4. The filter surfaces should be examined at periodic intervals to
see if they have deteriorated. It may be possible to restore the surfaces
using glass polishing compounds such as those used for producing
telescope mirrors. Alternatively it could be worth trying paint cutting
compounds made for cleaning car paintwork, and finishing off with metal
polish.
5. Some early stereo projectors with mains voltage lamps had the heat
filters in the form of narrow strips to minimise risk of thermal
fracture. This seemed to be all right with the large filaments of these
lamps, but with the much smaller filaments of quartz-halogen lamps the
lines between the filter strips are often visible on the screen. It is
generally preferable to replace them with single piece filters.

LOCATION OF POLARISING FILTERS
As mentioned in previous Clinics, I have found it to be of
considerable advantage to position the polarising filters behind the
slide. This considerably reduces the heat transmitted to the slide and
hence offers significantly better protection to our valuable and often
irreplaceable slides.
Particular care should be taken to obtain a good flow of cooling air
over the filters, as they will obviously become quite warm in operation.
Their polarising properties are greatly reduced if they become
excessively hot for protracted periods. The selected location in the
projector should ensure that the beam of light has the greatest possible
diameter, so the preferred location is close to the bi-convex condensers.
This distributes the heat over the biggest possible area and avoids the
concentration of heat, in the same way as I am sure we have all
experienced the focusing of the sun's rays on to the back of one's hand.
It is essential to avoid the use of certain transparent plastic
materials for protecting mounted slides, as these can completely
depolarise the light. Particular types of film base can have similar
properties, but fortunately most of the popular film types seem
satisfactory in this respect.
