Netscape does a great job of attaching images and other file types to email.
However there are considerations. First and foremost, images and attachments
should NEVER be sent to an email group!!!!! This is common courtesy for a
number of reasons. I'm not at all sure how well the listserv software would
handle the different types of conversions to begin with. Then only those
members who are using the right type of decoding would get the attachment in
a usable form. For others it's a matter of cost as they are connected to
accounts that charge by content volume and attachments will cost them extra.
They may not even be interested in the content. Ideally they should upgrade
to the readily available flat-rate systems out there but that's not always
practical.
Currently I have MIME decoding on my Netscape software and that covers 90%+
of attachments ever sent to me. The other prime method is UUencoded, which
as I understand it is available to add to my Netscape program. If there are
special images or other files that need to go to the group, they should be
made avaiable by other means such as a web page, an FTP location, or offer
to send the additional information at the request of those interested. My
guess is that this attachment was UUencoded or was scrambled by the listerv
software. Either case making it unreadable for most.
