>In the camera bag, with my Realist, there were two rubber gaskets
>that have the same outer diameter as the inner diameter of the insides
>of the lens hood/cap. Is this a coincedence? or were they part of the
>original packing? One of them is good the other one is shot.

Then George responded:

>I do not know... but a rubber cub was supplied with a Realist I bought
>sometime ago. I was told that this was an accessory (sold by a third
>party) and it is used to cover one lens for various applications like:

>1- Hyperstereos
>2- Hypostereos (w/close-up lenses)
>3- Trick photography
>4- Projection or Computer 3d

>The idea here is this:

>- You take the first picture (L) with the R lens covered.
>- Then move the camera several feet away (1), less than 2 1/2 inches
> in a slide bar (2), move the subject or whatever (3), display the
> right computer or projection image (possibly moving the camera too)
> (4), etc.
>- Take the second picture (R) with the L lens covered.

>Of course, today we have SLRs which are the tools of choice for these
>applications. If you want to use the Realist (I have done it for # 4)
>then you could use anything you can think of, to cover one lens.

Another possibility is that they may have been barriers to dust. The Realist
lens covers are great for keeping out large rocks and fingers but do not fit
tight enough to keep out fine sand and dust. While hiking in a dusty
environment (the desert or the slopes of a volcano) any small breeze will
cause the dust to swirl about you in your own wind shadow.
A little dust in the mechanism is not as troublesome as very abrasive dust
on the lenses. I have glued thin, soft glove leather to my Realist's lens
cover and this makes a tight dust-proof seal for each lens.
