macro photography in museums

Forgive me if I was napping while this was discussed before, but has
anyone experience with stereo photography of small objects in a museum?
This might mean through glass, possibily without tripod, inadequate
light, and so on.
Sometimes I'm sure I'll have ideal circumstances, but sometimes I'll
have to pay my museum admission and behave according to the same rules
as everyone else.
The subjects will be as small as 1 cm to perhaps 20 cm.
What would be useful would be suggestions as to cameras, film, filters,
tripods, formats, and whatever else might be useful. This goes beyond
the purely technical, as some cameras must look less threatening to
security types than others....
