|audience? A well designed page that fits a 640 x 480 monitor "should" 
|look OK at any other resolution, the same can not be said for something 
|designed to be larger than that to start... Just another 2 cents worth!

Yes - here, I recommend to students that they use pictures no wider
than 500 pixels, unless they have a specific reason to do so. 

It makes 3 panel views somewhat small, but otherwise you have to rely
on browsers with the ability to scroll horizontally (or download 
pictures into another application) (or pre-knowledge that the user has
a larger monitor...)
