Too much depth?

For the record, were these observations based on projection or viewing by
viewer? If by projection, don't we need to establish that Mike and
George sat in the same row before comparing perception of depth? And
once that is clear, how do we distiguish between differences in the
reconstructed depth vs. a simple stylistic preference? What does the
Doctor mean by "too much depth?" He would have composed the scene
differently to reduce the distance between nearest and farthest objects?
He would have mounted the chips differently?
