Re: Ortho Grand Canyon
Sorry, I don't have to add anything to the subject, but I would like to
say that I enjoyed Paul's description of how he got hooked into 3d when
he saw a nice stereo of Grand Canyon:
>I did not have any particularly compelling interest in becoming a stereo-
>photographer...that is, until my friend popped in a Realist-format image
>of the Grand Canyon. That's the one that pushed me over the edge! The
>photographer knew enough to include a little bit of the ledge on which
>he was standing in the foreground. [...]
>I caught the bug because of that image and will never forget the
>experience. [...]
>The realism of a
>good Realist image of the Grand Canyon does a wonderful job of making me
>feel like I am there, which of course is a very powerful experience. A
>good hyper of the Grand Canyon is interesting and enjoyable, but I have
>not seen one that captures that sense of being there.
Many of us have a similar story to share...
I've talked many times about this realism that gets people hooked into
3d. The "sense of being there". It is a powerful and striking feeling.
Unfortunately, this feeling is not transferred well when freeviewing
stereo cards or computer images or anaglyphs, or lenticulars and I think
this is the difference between Paul and myself one one side and Larry
on the other, in the discussion of hyperstereos. Hyperstereos are fun
to do occassionally, but they are no substitute for the realism of
stereo photography, in my opinion. It is this realism that has me hooked
and makes me enjoy my Realist the most. My twin SLRs, hyperstereos,
hypostereos, etc., etc., are "experiements". Yes, they are interesting,
fun, exciting, win PSA awards, etc., etc. but I get most of my satisfaction
from routine shots of my family, vacation pictures, and other good stuff
that come out of my ordinary Realist camera. Just my personal opinion.
Thank you and good night! -- George Themelis
