Realist repair video
Last night I watched Jess Powell's "Realist repair" video.
If you are into Realist repairs, this is something to check out.
I learned a lot myself and was also surprised to see that I
have used the "recommended" procedure in some of the problems
I have encountered with my cameras (great minds think alike? ;))
One of the things I learned is related to John Cooper's earlier
question regarding a flash problem in the Realist:
>My trusty realist 3.5 seems to have developed a new 'feature'!
>Any flash pictures I take seem to have the right hand frame almost
>entirely devoid of any light (maybe slightly more than available
>light only)
This appears to be a shutter synchronization problem. Jess shows
how to test if the shutters are well-synchronized. What is
happening with John's Realist is that there is a small delay
in the opening times for each shutter and the flash fires when only
one shutter is open. There is a rod that connects the two shutters.
It can be hammered to stretch and affect shutter action. It is
also possible to adjust flash synchronization.
Only this tip that I learned by watching this video make the
purchase price well worth it. It is available from the "author"
or from Dalia ($29.95 plus shipping).
Other stereo camera repair videos (books too!) by the same author
include Kodak (one of his favorite cameras!), Revere/Wollensak,
TDC Colorist I&II.
Jess also does repairs for a reasonable fee. He can be reached
at (916) 666-5334. Tell him Dr. T sent you ;)
Regards -- George Themelis
