The idea is to make the rods (two, one for each shutter) shorter or 
longer.  To make them shorter you introduce a bend.  To make them longer
you hammer them (= hit them with a hammer!) to stretch them.  I have seen
the hammer marks in many Realists.  I assume that the rods are taken out
and the hammer strices some tool like a screwdriver.
