Stereo New England had a great meeting today...hosted by the gracious and
socially well adjusted Dick Koolish ( he is the Koolish guy I know!) at Bolt,
Beranek and Newman's presentation auditorium, in Cambridge MA.

Other Photo 3-D subscribers present were Diplomat Eric Goldstein, Tim Smith,
The Koolish Man, Ron Labbe.....
and our regulars such as Janet Moyer, Paul Wing, Jim McDonough...and the
eloquent and always underwater 3-D maven Ed Jameson!

We had a brisk trade show beforehand. Paul Wing hung out his shingle and
signed away copies of his new book.....I was so busy with my own
table....that I did'nt get my copy signed....and Paul was literally next to
me....it was a madhouse...lots of new young faces in the crowd... great to
see!

After announcements and a 3-D auction,....we saw our first program, which
Paul Wing put together..... shots he had done over the years for the company
he worked for, Masonelian. All close-up macro studies of faulty valve
fixtures....specialty high-pressure valves used in power plants, the oil and
utility industries, etc, etc,. The show was fascinating...and funny as
Paul's humor is in his "seriousness" sometimes....he doesn't even realize how
funny he is without trying. The show was accented with custom titles that
the late Ted Lambert had produced for Paul over thrity years ago....they were
equally funny...and had a hokey, sweet simple innocence to them that took us
back twenty, thirty, forty years stylistically. Clever...simple and
beutifully executed.

The main program: Dick LaForge's is someone I met while travelling through
northern California this past summer...and with my NSA guide....I looked up
the town I was in Eureka...to be exact, and there was Dick's name. Boy am I
glad I took the bold chance to call out of the blue. Dick generously
invited me to breakfast at his home the next morning, where I had hot oatmeal
with fresh honey from his apiary...and fruit from the LaForge groves, before
Dick headed off to work. Of course we got down to why we all get together in
the first place....good 3-D....and it took only a few of his 3-D images of
cave explorations for me to relize that I was going to heavily lobby Dick for
a show for the Stereo New England group.
Dick's collection of images are amazing...to look at, and to see and hear
about what hardships had to be endured to get the end results.....fabulous
images of the Lechuguilla Caves, the greatest cave discovery of the 20th
century....found in 1986.....90 plus miles of cave networks...only explored
by carefully screened cavers with specific purpose of exploration...no
casual or tourist caving allowed, all supervised by the Park Service. Shot
with a Realist....extremely well lit....and all shots taken with flash bulbs
only. This place is otherworldy in its beauty...and no wonder...very few
humans have seen it....and been there...so its creation is millions of years
of completely natural development by minerals...water, gravity, wind and
natures ways...totally free of human interuption and intervention.

Finally...a short selection of slide from the Fossil Mountain Ice Cave, in
the Grand Tetons...which were quite different aesthetically from Lechuguilla
....yet fabulous in their own right.

Stereo New England had a record meeting turnout of over 130 people....about
10 of them from the local Boston./New England cavers (spelunkers) club.
Tenatively....the first Wednesday eve in March, I am set to show Spelunker
LaForge's great work to their group.

Never miss this show if it comes your way.

In cavernous D-D-D-epth to you all....Jon Golden
