Morbid Question...

Although this is not a 3D related question, it does pertain to photography
and i'm hoping someone on the list can help.  

I understand that during the time old cabinet photos were taken, they used to
take "Post-Mortum" or photos of the dead family members before they buried
them.
I guess this was especially common with babies that died,  they would prop
them up and take the photo as a memory of the child.  The question is...  is
there a key indicator or identifier of these type of photos??  I have several
photos where the eyes of some of the subjects look strange, but i'm not
really sure if that is an factor.  what else should i be looking for?    can
someone help??   thanks.  mike aversa
