Elliot,
Don't forget about the following RE: underwater photography...

        1. The water filters out the colors as you go deeper
           following the ROY G BIV color order.  Reds are pretty
           much gone by 10-12 ft.  By 30 ft, you're pretty much
           left with blues.

        2. The above info also occurs with the light from your strobe.
           Your strobe has to travel (in your example below) three 
           feet to get to your subject and then another three feet 
           to get back.  At a six feet distance total, you're already
           starting to lose some of the reds.

        3. All of this info is rather mute if you have "stuff" in 
           suspension in the water (dirt, mud, fish droppings, etc...).

How did the housing perform?  How deep were you able to go?
