Re: Projectors

Mark Kerns asks for advice on what projector to buy. Mark, you have a few
choices but not as many as you might think.

There are two basic groups of projectors: 1) The "Oldies". 2) Contemporary
ones. In the second group I only know of 3 stereo projectors:

a) RBT (by Deep-Pocket-Corporation) to the tune of $3500+. This is a
modern projector and the only stereo projector that can feed your
(RBT-mounted :)) slides automatically.

b) Brackett Dissover (made by Bob Brackett using Kodak parts in small
batches and costing a bit under $2000; now the order books are closed but
they might open in the future), the only stereo projector with built-in
dissolve capablitity (manually operated).

c) FED (check with Joel? I don't know much about these).

>From the "Oldies" the most common, reliable and reasonably priced, is the
TDC (by Three-Dimension-Company). This is often found for under $300.
There are two versions, model 116 and model 716 whose differences have been
discussed extensively in past digests. Another common projector is the
Compco Triad.

Dalia's catalogs have nice illustrations of these projectors and the
prices there will give you a good idea of the price range. In my mind,
an advantage of the "oldies" is that they are simple, reliable and
relatively inexpensive, making them an excellent choice for a beginner.
Disadvantages include the high wattage older bulbs, noise, and weight (they
are heavy!)

Right now I am using a TDC 116 and I am sufficiently happy with it. Later
on, when and if I ever get moving with public stereo projections (and/or
get divorced or win the lotto :)) I might consider an RBT or a Brackett
Dissolver.
