with regards to not getting zzapped by the photo-flash cap, the safest way
to discharge it is to touch a fairly high value resistor, maybe 10 or 20 k
to the terminals, and hold it there for several seconds. (use plastic
tweezers to hold the resistor to avoid a shock) Then make sure it's dead
by shorting the cap with a piece of wire. (don't simply short the cap with
a wire before draining it with a resistor- you'll get a *really* loud
noise, and a little spot-welding demo..)
A cautionary tale- once I was working on a power supply, and wanted to
double check a capacitor was drained before connecting a capacitor meter
to check for leakage- used the first bit of metal that came to hand: a
large staple from a cardboard carton. After the soul of the capacitor
meter departed this earth with a bang and a puff of smoke, I realized the
staples for cardboard boxes are coated with lacquer to keep them shiny...
