Advise from the net.
Max exposure with a fixed Camera and Lens
Declination (degrees)
Focal Length 0 30 45 60 75
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
28mm 35 40 50 75 140
50mm 20 23 28 40 75
135mm 7.5 8.5 11 15 30
200mm 5 5.5 7 10 20
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This assumes 400 asa film, derate as required. Best results may come at
shorter times if in a light polluted area or a full or gibbous moon is
up (like this weekend!)
At these times stars will trail noticeably. The rule of thumb for stars
to still appear round is 5 seconds max exposure time at 50 mm fl, derate
linearly with fl.
Please not these are suggestions not guarantees!
Clear skies,
John
