->I've been wondering how consistently the sprocket holes line up with
->the exposed image area on a piece of film from a given camera. For
->example, on the Realist, I would think the sprocket holes are in the
->same position relative to the exposed part of the film on all shots.
->(For example, one sprocket hole is edge aligned with the exposure, or
->halfway across, or something like that.)
->
->If there is reasonably consistency, it should be possible to figure
->out where the sprocket holes should be for the left and right film
->chips relative to the opening in the mount. And if that's true, it
->should be possible to make a real idiot's mounting guide by xeroxing
->the inside of a well mounted slide pair to see where the sprocket
->holes align. You could then use this to align all future slides.
->
->Am I missing something? Does "proper" alignment vary according to the
->composition of the slide? Or are the film transports in the cameras
->not that consistent?
->
->Thanks,

Well one of our veteran members (since 1957) thought along the same
lines as you. He went one step further and made his own mount punch.
This has four small holes punched in the back card. These allow pins to
pass through the card. The chips are then dropped onto the pins and
taped down. The front card is then glued onto the back one and the slide
is mounted.
This method ensures that the infinity points are always separated by the
same amount. I've never detected any mounting errors from this member,
so his camera, at least, must register fairly accurately with the
sprockets. For the record, he uses an Iloca.
