Realist advantages?

I've wondered whether these differences were the result of different
designers trying to avoid any patent disputes by infringing on the
Realist design. You design it just different enough that it's not
the same, but close enough that your design is compatible. It has
also occurred to me that the Kodak/Revere designers might have been
trying to improve on the tendancy of the Realist to overlap frames
by leaving more space between them. Any thoughts out there?
