That's correct and such viewers exist. These are the ones with a hinge in
the center.

I am sure you would. But this is because of the unsatisfying viewing
conditions that result from the thick glasses that you are wearing and also
from the fact that these 2x2x2 viewers do not have decent lenses.
Those of us who admired the medium format stereo images in expo-2 know that
a good viewer under good viewing condition is hard to beat. Some of the
advantages of the viewer vs. projection:
- Lack of ghosting
- Clarity of images (fine details can be seen)
- Hight contrast images still view OK.
- Ortho-viewing conditions (higher magnification)
