As Gabriel Jacob correctly points out, there is not much really new in
stereo viewers. Many of the ideas that seem new are actually old ones
redone.
I find that this feature is one of the appeals for me to build some of
my viewers. Like a modern stereo photographer who wants to take photo's
using only the original old view cameras, I find enjoyment and great
satisfaction in building new viewers based upon previously unknown old
designs. You can learn a lot doing this, and sometimes find a modern
application for the device that never existed 100 years ago. Using my
Freeviewer's Assistant for computer viewing of stereo pairs was
certainly not in the original concept 100 years ago, neither was a
pivoting mirror.
And a pivoting mirror is not a new idea either by itself.
There are many talented people on this list who make their own special
devices for whatever purpose they have. But I don't see many being sold
for general use. This is what I try to do that is different. I am
trying to offer to everyone things that they couldn't get before, and
offer a history lesson on my web page.
On the subject of serial numbers:
I was careful to not bring up the subject on my web page. I am not
going to serialize these viewers when I make the offering on Sell-3d. I
will sign and date them only, and this is not an assurance of being the
first one made or sold.
On the subject of the 3dKit that I show on the web page:
Anyone think that this concept is a good idea? (again, not a new idea,
just a good idea).
I would think that there are many people who have the talent to
fabricate devices but lack the design information and supplies to do
it. People who know what building a HeathKit (in the old days) was
like, the personal satisfaction of doing it yourself.
I would like to expand this concept, and would appreciate suggestions on
what other simple to make projects you want.
