The short answer is YES. The short question is WHEN? The timing will be
dependent on the design goals adopted by those who do the development work.
If they follow typical decision paths, such a level of progress may not be
in our lifetimes, though it's technologically possible within the next five
years. I would be surprised if someone actually sets out to accomplish such
a thing. So no need to jump fences just yet...except for the purpose of
encouraging such developments, knowing they are possible and basically
within reach.

The inclusion of the red button viewer in your statement is an issue
completely different from film or camera. As much as I appreciate viewing
through a red button viewer, the promise of LCS viewing combined with a
means to quickly scan one's slides into the computer, stands a real chance
to become the favored method of viewing, and easy precision alignment too.
It's likely that the Realist will still be a favored camera long after most
folk view their stereo images on the computer screen.
