Impressionable newbies, stereo in science

I'd rather not lengthen the thread about the effect of biased statements on
impressionable newbies, but I would like to say that the opinions expressed
in photo-3d have saved me a great deal of time, expense, & frustration.
The list is a great resource & I often find that the most opinionated
contributors are ultimately the most helpful. I enjoy the informed
enthusiasm- as long as it's on topic, I will listen to whatever any of you
has to say and sort out the details myself. The notion that opinions have
a detrimental effect on newbies does little credit to them or the people
who are thoughtful enough to offer the insights gained after years of
stereoproficiency.

The post about stereoscopy in scientific research was much more interesting
(to me):

>I don't know all the specifics, but in a report on the news, they said that
>due to scientists looking at computer models of the aids virus in stereo and
>then they were able to see a special protien that could not be seen before
>in 2-D! They believe that this could lead to a cure....

The AP wire reported this too, with a little more detail- the researchers
found an invagination on the surface envelope of the virus which acts a
binding site. The promise comes from the observation that this site does
not mutate as rapidly as other parts of the retrovirus. The hope is that
they will be able to locate a protein or drug which targets this binding
site, effectively disabling the virus. A cure is still a long long way
away, but I am proud to know that our collective passion has yielded such
important information to the scientific community!

BTW, I shot about two dozen rolls of stereos in 1996 and hope to do the
same or more in 97 (only with more "keepers").

I look forward to reading all of your opinions, diatribes, etc. Keep 'em
coming!

Matthew
