Aside from the expensive and tricky lenticular screen formats, I know of
one unusual method, used in 1954 by the publishers of Peter Gowland's
"The Art and Technique of Stereo Photography" (Crown Publishers, Inc.,
New York City, 1954). Pasted inside the back cover of the hard-cover
book was an envelope containing black-and-white positive film strips for
5 Realist-format stereo pairs. The readers were expected to cut and
mount the stereo pairs themselves and to use their own realist format
stereo slide viewers. This worked very well for me, but I imagine that
it caused some consternation among buyers who didn't have the viewers
and mounts!
Cordially,
