Standards

I don't think we're talking about a case of insisting that all recorded
sound be on either CD or tape in order to be "standard". We're talking
about all CDs being recorded in the same way so that you don't need a
half-dozen different players to listen to the CD products from a half-dozen
different companies. In the case of anaglyph pictures it's a small matter
-- you just hold your glasses "frontwards" or "backwards", whichever looks
right -- but we've also been seeing a thread here about 3D video standards
where several competing (expensive) glasses use competing systems which
aren't necessarily compatible with each other. Eventually a standard will
emerge if all the competition doesn't do each other in first, and then a
lot of people will be putting a lot of 3D hardware on the shelves beside
their Beta tape players and 8-tracks.
