I'm sure some are tired of the endless video-signal discussions, but I'm
about to contribute to it.  I welcome off-list replies if no one finds this
question 3-D-relevant.

Why is the NTSC frame rate 29.97?  Some sources say it happened at the
advent of color, because the color signal "contained more information" and
hence needed more time.  This doesn't sound right.  I read a more compelling
story about an old theory (now disproven) that an exact 30 Hz rate would
cause a problem.  I don't remember what the theoretical problem was.  Does
anybody know?
