East of Eadie in Three-D

Well, though ABC doesn't know it, 3D storytelling is alive and well. I was
treated to list member Ray Dobbins' successful experiment in 3D
narrative here in New York last night. Way off Broadway, at P.S. 122 in the
East Village, Ray's show "East of Eadie" chronicles the struggles of a
cross-dressing photographer (Eadie) who, facing eviction from her home,
becomes enchanted with the historical figure Elagabalus, a little known
(real-life) emperor of Rome.

The show's climax is the revelation of Eadie's art project, a 3D slide show
of the life of the randy, outrageous young emperor. Ray took the pictures
himself, and did a fantastic job. He shot with a kodak stereo and made B&W
prints, using any means necessary to give them a vintage feel, then made
anaglyphs in photoshop and output to slide. Several were composited with
models or other photos. The effect worked well and was funny, too.

The whole show has an old-time feel, kind of vaudevillian, with little
piano-accompanied ditties and ridiculous props. The gag-filled script
(Ray calls it a "joke museum") comes off, thanks mostly to the bountiful
charms and excellent comic timing of lead actor-ess Bette Bourne. In a
previous life, he was a british stage actor and frequent guest on TV's
Avengers, but, according to Ray, "took lots of acid during the 70's and
became a drag queen." She's now a sweet, funny star. Though drag has lost
some of its bite in a world where RuPaul is mainstream , Bette balances the
camp with melancholy, and really is something to see.

The subject matter is probably not for everyone, but if you
want to see someone doing something interesting and new with 3D, this is it.

One audience member proclaimed "I got the same headache I got from B'wana
devil!"

I have no affiliation with PS122, well, Ray is a friend... but this is for
supporting people doing 3D with guts and inventiveness, right? It's at
