Film Grain

Regarding Greg's question about film grain...

I had the opportunity to view a display that Fuji had set up when
Velvia was introduced a few years back. They had photographed the
same outdoor scene on K25, K64, and Velvia. I believe they had
both 35mm and 120 roll film positives available to look at with
a loupe. After careful examination, I concluded that Velvia
grain was better than K64, but not quite as good as K25. It had
noticably better color saturation and contrast though. The
results were not really that surprising to me as I would expect
that an ASA 40/50 film would have better grain than an ASA 64, and
would have worse grain than an ASA 25. My own photography using
all three of these stock has produced the same results. The RMS
grain numbers match my own observations, so I don't know quite
what Greg's looking at, but for my money K25 is still the film to
beat for film grain.

I find Velvia to be to contrasty for most of my use and for skin
tones it does give a magenta cast. This is not just my opinion,
Fuji designed it that way and mentions it in their brochure,
'VELVIA's New World of Imagery', on page two. It's a useful film
for some outdoor work, though, and I have used it on a few
occasions to produce nice photos. Your mileage may vary...
